The treaty
The Treaty, SIB’s UN newspaper, delivers sharp insights on geopolitics, human rights, and global affairs. Published every two months, it’s your platform for informed perspectives on the world’s most pressing issues.
Dear Reader,
It’s a real pleasure to introduce this issue—not just because of the theme, but because it marks The Treaty’s first-ever joint edition. We’ve had the chance to collaborate with the student magazine European Horizons, who contributed several insightful pieces that explore this month’s topic from new and diverse angles. We’re especially grateful to Michalina Nowakowska, whose initiative and support made this cooperation possible.
In this April issue of The Treaty, we take a closer look at multilateralism—an idea that once seemed like a given in global politics, but now feels increasingly fragile. Built on principles like dialogue, solidarity, and shared responsibility, multilateralism has long enabled countries to come together and tackle problems through institutions like the United Nations.
As global power dynamics shift, wars continue, and nationalism grows louder, the idea that countries can truly work together is being put to the test. The systems that were meant to unite us—like the United Nations—are still standing, but cracks are starting to show. So we asked ourselves: what does multilateralism actually look like today? Can it still work? And if so, what needs to change?
This issue explores what multilateralism still means—and what it might need to become to stay relevant in today’s world.
A special thank you goes to Ginevra for the design and creative direction of this issue!
Happy International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace!

Dear Reader,
Women’s rights have long been at the heart of global conversations, from the halls of the United Nations to grassroots movements demanding change. Yet, persistent inequalities, political pushbacks, and conflicts continue to shape the realities of women worldwide. But how far have we truly come?
Last year, we dedicated an issue to this day, and we are proud to do so again. Gender equality isn’t a one-time discussion; it’s an ongoing fight shaped by politics, culture, and everyday realities. This edition brings together perspectives on where we stand, what’s changing, and what still needs to be done. More relevant information can also be found on unwomen.org.
We hope these pieces spark thought, conversation, and maybe even action. Happy International Women’s Day 2025!

International Day of Education Issue 02/2024-2025
Dear Reader,
The Treaty proudly presents its first edition of 2025, and we want to take this opportunity toexpress our heartfelt thanks—not only to you, our loyal readership, but also to our dedicated writers, whose continued support makes this all possible. We believe everyone deserves recognition for sticking with us, especially with such busy university schedules!
This issue seeks to connect the everyday realities of student life with the broader meaning of education, as we celebrate the International Day of Education on January 24th, 2025.
Education is not only important, but as the United Nations General Assembly reminds us, it is "a human right, a public good, and a public responsibility."
So without further ado, happy reading!
Warm wishes,
Mona-Lou Henschel
