Jerusalem and its role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict | February introduction week

  • SIB Amsterdam 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht Amsterdam, NH, 1018 WV Netherlands (map)

Dear SIB members,

On December 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump announced the United States recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and ordered the planned relocation of the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This move led to international criticism from multiple countries such as Britain, France, Sweden, Italy and Japan whilst other countries such as Guatemala, Paraguay and Romania were in favour of this move.  Since then the world has remained largely divided on this major topic. The crucial questions that arise from this controversial decision are amongst others: what role does Jerusalem play in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? What can we expect from future Israeli-Palestinian relations? What is the global impact of this historic decision on the rest of the world? We will touch upon such questions with our speaker Phyllis Bennis. Ms. Bennis is an American writer, activist, political commentator, a fellow of the Transnational Institute based in Amsterdam and also works at the Institute for Policy Studies in the US. Join our zoom-event on the 3rd of February at 17:30. It promises to be an interesting day with enough time for questions.
