Humanitarian work in Afghanistan, Iraq and Jordan
Perspectives on humanitarian work in different environments and contexts
Dear guests,
By attending an event of Connecting Conversations you will not experience something like any online discussion, interview- or panel session. Following our events will widen your horizon and will bring you closer to understanding different or new perspectives. Our world is affected by polarization and because of media bubbles and media distrust, it is getting more difficult to intervene within these echo chambers. We bring a platform that makes it possible to discuss controversial topics, where we will respect all questions and opinions, as long as they are presented with respect. We think sharing different perspectives is very important in our current world, where people of different cultures, political backgrounds, and levels of society tend to understand each other less. Solutions and policies to fight against racism and polarization cannot work if there is no deeper understanding of each others' perspectives and backgrounds. We need to get to the core of this problem by connecting, inspiring, and educating people to understand each other and thrive.
In this event, our aim is to give the audience an in-depth view of the work of humanitarian professionals across the Middle East. We invited international guest speakers that will share their experiences working in Afghanistan, Iraq and Jordan. We hope we can learn more about how diverse and complex humanitarian work is in the Middle East, from working with genocide survivors in Iraq, to running a refugee registration center in Jordan, and contributing to the UN mission in Afghanistan. In addition, we also want to pay attention to the stories of the victims that our guests have been working with. We start with explaining the geographical situation within these different regions, since this can be quite complex and therefore is important to understand before listening to our guests. We will discuss differences between humanitarians who chose to start their own NGO in order to contribute to improving urgent situations, versus persons who do this through a career with established organizations, such as the UN, UNHCR. What are their experiences and motivations? Attention will also be paid to the personal stories of the guest speakers and how much their work influenced them as an individual. We will discuss this and much more during our event while putting a focus on sharing personal perspectives and last but not least… close the event with a cinema chronicle with three film recommendations related to the Middle-East in case you want to learn more about this topic! Of course, there will also be plenty of room for questions.
