On Friday June 12th, we will organize our first online SIB Cinema! That means that we will show you an amazing and inspiring documentary from a distance, while we can still watch it together and chat in the meantime! We are organizing this SIB Cinema in light of the recent events in the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. Please note, we kindly ask you to sign up for this event using the form under ‘tickets’. In that way, we can share the link to watch the documentary with you in a safe way.
The documentary we are going to show is the award winning 13TH (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6IXQbXPO3I). In the documentary, director DuVernay (who directed Selma) attempts to debunk the mythology of inherent black criminality and suggests that the disproportionate number of African-Americans behind bars today is another, modern-day version of slavery. The film’s title is taken from the American Constitution’s 13th amendment, which reads, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” 13th blends archival footage with interviews with formerly incarcerated men and women; politicians; activists; and historians.
As said, we are watching this documentary in light of the recent events in the US with regards to the death of George Floyd. His death was followed by protests all over the world, condemning police brutality and systemic racism. We would like to watch this documentary together with you, in order to learn more about racial injustice in the US and with that, part of the background of these events. Afterwards, we’ll have an optional Zoom meeting to discuss the documentary.
You do not need to be a member to participate. However, as said before, we do kindly ask you to sign up using the form under ‘tickets’. We will watch the documentary through ‘Netflix Party’ and we will send the link for watching on the day itself, with further instructions. The only thing you need to do is make sure you have access to a Netflix account and get the Netflix Party extension. You can find the steps to do so on https://www.netflixparty.com. However, if you do not have access to a Netflix party, you can still participate. Please sign up for more information. The documentary will start at 8 pm. You can participate or drop out at any time, but it is of course much more fun if you are on time and stay during the evening!
We hope to see you (online) on the 12th!
